Aegis Risk was created to provide dedicated and knowledgeable focus on aspects of an employee benefit program with a distinct orientation towards risk management - particularly medical stop loss.
While many full-service benefits advisors increasingly operate as vendor managers—viewing stop-loss as one of many outsourced client transactions—we take a different approach. At Aegis Risk, it's our strategic focus.
In fact, mistakes related to medical stop loss placements are one of the most common causes of Errors & Omission claims against large firm benefits brokers and consultants. Most on their teams simply don't know the coverage and its outsized exposures and technical nuances.
In response, some have developed stop loss ‘centers of excellence’ - however, not for the stated purpose of providing ‘excellence’, but instead to manage their own firm's exposure to E & O claims. As stop-loss premiums have grown, so too has a trend of opaque compensation models and “pay-to-play” bid panels to increase their revenue. At Aegis Risk, we reject those incentives. For us, stop loss is a dedicated expertise, not a loss control initiative or a non-transparent revenue source to meet earnings.

Founded in 2005 by Ryan Siemers, a veteran of over 30 years in health plan underwriting and benefits consulting, Aegis Risk continues to deliver consultative, accountable leadership in the stop-loss market. About Ryan Siemers, CEBS
Founder and Principal, Aegis Risk
Ryan is a nationally recognized expert in self-funding and catastrophic risk management—particularly medical stop-loss insurance. As founder and principal of Aegis Risk, Ryan leads firm strategy and oversees all client, partner, and carrier relationships. He is also the author of the annual Aegis Risk Medical Stop-Loss Premium Survey, a widely referenced industry benchmark.
Prior to launching Aegis Risk in 2005, Ryan served as a senior health and welfare consultant at a major national firm, advising Fortune 500 employers like Marriott International, Bank of America, and U.S. Foodservice. Despite this large-market focus, he maintained deep involvement with mid-sized employers—many of whom relied on medical stop-loss protection rarely understood or advised upon by his peers. That disconnect inspired the founding of Aegis Risk, a firm built from day one with stop-loss as its core discipline.
As Ryan’s former national practice leader candidly remarked upon his departure: “Stop loss—that’s a good one. We don’t cover that well at all.”
Ryan holds the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation and is a past president of the 3,000+ member International Society of CEBS. Away from the office, he’s an avid skier and proudly serves with the National Ski Patrol as a volunteer.

Our plan year services are typically compensated via fully disclosed plan commissions or mutually agreed upon fees-for-service.
